I’ve never done an intro post, but this seems like the time to do it- sooooo. Here. We. Go.
I’m tayla shanaye (she/her). I am a mama to a little being who is about to turn 1, a partner, a healer, a scholar, a medicine maker for @we.the.earth and a wombyn of color. My body is the answered prayer of so many beings from so many places- my brown skin the beauty of African and European ancestry.
My body has guided me in so many ways. My own healing journey has guided me from the world of theatre and dance to yoga to somatic psychology and shamanic traditions. I hold a masters in somatic psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies and during the course of my studies, I focused primarily on the somatic trauma of racism and activism; work that I have done on the frontlines and in the aftermath of rebellion.
Now, I’m inching toward a PhD in women’s spirituality in order to uplift the experience, wisdom and knowledge of black and brown healers and midwives. By uplifting this narrative, I’m looking to demolish the structures that define healing and transformation based on narrow patriarchal and white supremacist narratives.
My work as a healer varies from one-on-one therapeutic sessions, bodywork (when we used to get close), herbal medicine making, and group somatic and relational education and facilitation. All of this work is, from my view, the work of the resistance: resisting patriarchy, white supremacy, capitalism, and trauma. It’s about reconnecting. It’s about coming home to our earthling bodies, on our earthly body. It’s about transforming our view of ourselves - with the body shifting from the site of our oppression to the site of our liberation.
Showing up body first and healing first in the US has always been a challenge...and doing it right now requires much more. It requires resourcing, patience, moments of deep grief and prayer, moments of hot rage and destruction. It requires a presence that can only happen from an inhabited self- a connection to the current moment through breath and the felt-sense. 👇🏾continued👇🏾
